Enrique Vargas, a local deputy from the State of Mexico and a hopeful candidate for the opposition alliance in the gubernatorial race, purchased a mansion in Bosques de las Lomas, Mexico City, in 2017 for just 10% of its market value from a woman who had passed away 20 months earlier.
He acquired the 630-square-meter (about 6,781 square feet) property for 3.4 million pesos (about 183,784 dollars), paying 5,397 pesos per square meter (about 27 dollars per square feet), while similar properties in the area are valued between 35,000 and 59,000 pesos per square meter (approximately between 176 and 296 dollars per square foot).
Vargas acted as both the buyer and the representative for the deceased owner, María Eugenia Romero Madrid, in a transaction that took place 20 months after her death, according to records from the Public Registry.
The deal, finalized in November 2017, was reported to the Public Registry in May 2016—months after Romero Madrid had passed away.
